HISTORY
Evalisse and Miguel had planned on having many children. The moment they were married, they tried for years to have children, with a few miscarriages along the way. Then, Evalisse made it through the first trimester. That was when they started telling their families. The pregnancy wasn't easy and Evalisse worried a lot, always listening to the many, silly warnings coming from the elder women in her family and Miguel's family. On the first of June, Rosalyn was born, healthy and screaming. Still elated that they finally had a child, Evalisse and Miguel continued to try for more. By the time Rosa was five, Evalisse had six more miscarriages and two stillbirths. The air in the Diaz house was thick and full of sorrow. The only time Rosa had any real fun, was when her aunts and uncles would take her for the weekend. At home, she couldn't run and play like most children her age. She was often scolded for only laughing. Her parents were broken shells of their once happy selves. Too many lost children had them lost themselves and Rosa was on the receiving end of her parents growing hatred for one another. She didn't understand why her mother didn't sing her to sleep or why her father didn't hug her goodnight. She often begged her Aunt Cynthia to let her stay with her and her cousins, but Cynthia didn't know just how bad her baby sister was. When Rosa was eight, her mother left. Later, Rosa would find out that Evalissa had left a note, blaming Miguel for the many miscarriages, blaming Rosa for the stillbirths, saying that her pregnancy with Rosa had drained the life from her. Miguel didn't change his tune. He neglected Rosa for months at a time, until he finally left as well. Miguel didn't tell anyone he was leaving. Rosa came home from school to an empty house, which wasn't out of the ordinary. She didn't tell anyone. When she was caught shoplifting from the grocery store, CPS had called their house only to find the phone was disconnected. Driving her home, the Diaz home was found empty, except for Rosa's room and some mismatched furniture. Rosalyn finally got her wish. Her aunt was granted custody and Rosa moved in with Cynthia and her four cousins. Having spent so much time there in the past, Rosa had no problem adjusting to her new living situation. Her cousins welcomed her, more than willing to share their toys and their mother. Rosa was finally able to laugh without being punished. There were some bumps along the way, of course, but Cynthia never left Rosa. There were many nights when Rosa climbed in to bed with aunt, scared that she was alone. Cynthia never minded, she calmed her neice until she was asleep and never mentioned it to anyone. When high school came, Rosa sought comfort in different ways. She wasn't completely aware of the dangers sweet talking high school boys could lead to. She thought they were being friendly and nice. She was naive and it was often taken advantage of. When she was a sophomore, her cousin's friend stayed at the house a lot and then he started coming over when only Rosa was home. She liked him and she liked the attention from him. Playful kissing led to more, until finally, Rosa gave in and she lost her virginity to him. He still came around after that, but left shortly after the sex was over with. When she started asking if they could be more, he stopped coming around so often and Rosa saw him around school with other girls. She was devastated, until another guy showed interest in her, then another. Rosa wasn't so naive anymore. She knew that sex could be used to get her the affection she craved. She didn't let guys sweet talk her so easily anymore, but in the end, she was the one left hurt and confused. Sex could only make her feel better for so long. With high school over, Rosa went to college and tried her best to not let her need for affection get the better of her. She even went to therapy, until her therapist had her bent over his desk. Upset with herself, Rosa transferred from the college in California to Texas, getting some distance between herself and her past. She did miss being so close to her aunt, but Rosa knew it was something she needed to do. Art became an escape for Rosa. While her new college friends were busy with parties, Rosa was losing herself in art and photography. It didn't exactly fill the hole that had grown inside of her, but it provided a much needed distraction -- and kept her legs closed. While in college, Rosa had a few of her own pieces being shown at an art show just outside of Midland. It wasn't anything much, but Rosa was excited for it none the less. It was there she met Robert, who didn't look like he belonged in the sort of crowd. By the end of the night, she was giving him her number and just before she got home, he called her to set up a date. It was a first for her, a real date. She agreed and they arranged a time. The night didn't even end with her on own back or him giving her empty promises. It ended with a kiss and then a plan for the second date. The courtship was breif. By the fourth date, he proposed and she said yes. Their fifth date was at Midland Courthouse where they were married. She moved in with him a few days later. She was introduced to the Reaper lifestyle, but was never given the title of Old Lady. She didn't know the difference at first, but soon came to learn that even as his wife, she wasn't given much higher stock in his life. Despite her lack of title, Rosa did what she could to be involved. From being available to babysit to making dinners when needed. She wanted to show Robert he could trust her, that she loved him and had quickly come to love the club. He didn't see any of it, though. He often told her she was a waste and the old ladies were telling him he shouldn't have married her. She would never be good enough to be his old lady. He only married her because he felt bad. At first, she took his negative comments in stride because he was drunk while saying them. Overtime, the insults came while sober and Rosa didn't know what to do. She loved him and loved being apart of the club. His abuse is only getting worse. |
